Sneakers gain foothold in world beyond gym

Every day should be Casual Friday — at least when comes to your feet.

At Thursday’s Oakland opening of “Out of the Box: The Rise of the Sneaker Culture,” a traveling exhibition that traces the sneaker’s path from utilitarian item to collector’s item, sneakers were, naturally, the footwear of choice.

Evelyn Orantes, the curator of public practice for the Oakland Museum of California, wore sequin high-top Converse Chuck Taylors. Lindsay Wright, the museum’s communications manager, wore black Via Spigas.
