How to Travel Like a Celebrity Stylist
Behind every “It Girl” is a secret weapon that makes the “it” happen. In LA, it’s Jeni Elizabeth. She’s styled the likes of Beyonce, Britney Spears, Eva Longoria, and Lindsay Lohan, just to name a few. Now this new mom and lead stylist behind Fox’s new talk show, The Real, shares her tips on how to travel stylishly, with baby and all.
If you can go anywhere in the world, where would it be? You’d have to take the little one mind you.
Well now that is a question that makes you think! You mean making my dreams come true?? Being that I work in fashion and have such a love for art and couture I must say I would love to take my son to France. My obsession with the hope that he will love style as much as I do seems to grow stronger everyday! Being able to experience the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame de Paris and tour the country with him would be a dream. I have never been myself and my hope is not that he is getting older it will be something we can do together. I could only be so lucky.
What would you pack, why, and in what?
Packing has always been somewhat of a fun game for me. I had it down to a science and then I had a child and EVERYTHING changed?! I make an effort to always make outfits, as to not overpack and go too overboard (but now with Tyler going through 8 looks a day, I am not sure there is such a thing as overboard anymore!). I am also a huge fan of the rolling as oppose to folding. I find you can fit ten times more clothing in a bag if it is rolled. There are times I even go so far as to put outfits in mini bags, and if you want to take it to the next level there is always vaccum packed bags! As for neccesities, I would have to say there is a look for everyday. Depending on whether you always want to be prepared for anything.
I like to think that more bulky items can be bought on the road if needed (and shipped home). For example a rain coat is a super smart thing to pack when traveling with children, but rainboots can be bought if needed. Always layers. One complete outfit for my child for the day actually includes 2 shirts (just to be prepared for all the dribbles) but for myself, I try to pack items that with a couple of accessory changes that can go from day to night, or even work for multiple days. For example a maxi skirt is genius.
A maxi can go from day to night with the switch of a casual t shirt for day and then perhaps a blazer or cardigan with some fun bangles for evening. Cardigans are also a must have on the road and instead of packing flip flops, I usually pack something like Jack Rogers, a sandal that is adorable during the day, but super cute at night as well maybe for a nice dinner.
Always my best jeans, multiple James Perse tanks and t shirts (with my son I now average three shirts a day myself!) The trick is not underpacking, but packing in a way that the items you have can work day and night and multiple days.
Traveling while pregnant, what should she pack?
When I was preggers, I was A MESS traveling. I, for some reason, thought I needed twice the amount, when in reality most of the time I lived in my favorite sweat pants and cozy tank top. The most important thing I packed when I was pregnant was my body pillow, and when I say packed I mean I ordered from diapers.com (which I am obsessed with!) and had it delivered to where I was! Yoga pants, tanks and tees were my favorite during pregnancy. Always a great pair of boyfriend jeans and always your favorite sneakers! Depending on where I was in my pregnancy, my bras played a very important role as well!
What were/are your favorite brands for when expecting?
I have to be honest, I wasn’t a huge maternity wear girl. I absolutely had my staples of leggings from The Gap Maternity and an abundance of sweatpants. I also had a bunch of button downs from Jcrew, but other than that I stuck with super cozy brands like Wildfox just in a larger size. For me, comfort during my pregnancy was most important. I wasn’t trying to end up on the cover of Vogue! I worked until I was 7 months, and running around on set and dressing a ton of people, the best thing I did for myself was invest in an amzing pair of sneakers, and super cute boots and I was good to go!
What are your favorite ‘must have’ baby brands?
There are so many! I have to admit, I’m an Honest girl. Not only are the diapers adorable, but I have come to love the products. Beyond being super safe for my child, they have everything you could need and they also deliver right to my door monthly which for any working mother is a god send! For bath time I am obsessed with Mustela bath and lotion.
As far as clothing, Tyler’s closet ranges from Oscar De La Renta and Burberry to Target, and I love that! I am obsessed with Jcrew glow in the dark PJ’s (I love peeking in on him and seeing him glowing in his crib!) I also love Boden and Hannah Anderson clothing.
As far as absolute “must haves”? Mustela, Honest Diapers, Gerber food and Dr. Browns bottles! I cannot live without those things!
Ideal diaper bag for traveling?
I have to admit I have two. I have the navy Gucci bag for the days I am just running to the park and the store. For trips or longer days we use our Pottry barn diaper bag and I love it…ITS HUGE! It has 2 sides and a million little compartments! I feel like it can hold everything from toys, blankets, bottles and treats. I do love my pottery barn, but who doesn’t!
